I’ve never been one of those people who gets in the car and confidently heads out without directions. I need to know the way and the straighter the path, the better; so when it comes to finding my way to heaven, I’m so glad that Jesus left clear directions!
Before his death, Jesus comforted his disciples by telling them that he was going ahead of them to make the way. Not understanding, Thomas protested, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” (John 14:5)
Jesus’ answer is the same today as it was those many years ago, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)
Have you been looking for the way? Have you felt that disquiet of the soul, that emptyness that causes you to wonder if this life is all there is? There is more. There is a better way, a way that leads to eternal life; but there is only one straight path that will get you there. It’s the way of the cross.
The truth is that no one may go to the Father without the Son. The reason is sin. We are all guilty. “For all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23). God the Father is holy and will not tolerate sin.
Sin has a price – a high price. The Bible says, “For the wages of sin is death,” (Romans 6:23a). Fortunately, God is not only holy, but also love, and in that love he provided an escape from death – his beloved Son. Romans 6:23 goes on to say, “but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23b)
Jesus provided the way to eternal life by paying the price of sin through his death on the cross. He died a death that led to life; he rose from the grave and lives today. This is the truth that leads to heaven.
Would you like to make this truth you’re own? The Bible gives all the direction we need. It says that if we confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord (giving him authority over us); and that if we believe in our hearts that God raised him from the dead, we will be saved. (paraphrased Romans 10:9 & 10)
I’ve been saved from the penalty of my sin; I’m on the road to that eternal home Jesus has gone ahead to prepare. If you’ve joined me in the journey, I hope you’ll let me know! I’d love to be an encouragement to you along the way!
